OBITUARY NOTICE Dateline: Crawfordsville, Iowa William "Bill" Asenjo, PhD, CRC William "Bill" Asenjo, Jr., age 60, of Crawfordsville, Iowa, died April 13 at his residence. The Jones Eden Funeral Home of Washington is assisting the family with arrangements. Bill was born November 4, 1948 in New York, New York, the son of William F. and Mary T. (Marzoa) Asenjo. He attended Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, New York, and received his BA from the University of Florida. Bill also received his Masters in Health Science and Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Florida. He later attended the University of Iowa where he received his PhD in Rehabilitation Counselor Education. Bill moved to Iowa City in 1994 and Crawfordsville in 2006. He previously lived in Gainesville, Florida. Bill worked in private practice as a Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant since 2000 and has been an instructor and lecturer at the University of Iowa since 1994. He has worked as a freelance writer and editor for the past twenty years having been published in many books, magazines and journals. The flame was lit when Chicken Soup for the Single Soul was published with his story about volunteering to help an elderly blind gentleman who lived in New York City. He wrote a column for the Wayland Reporter. Community involvement and volunteering were important to Bill. He was currently a member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club and the Washington County Cancer Society. Bill facilitated Substance Abuse Groups at the Johnson County Jail and was a speaker at the Workplace Learning Connection Center in Iowa City. He was a member and meeting facilitator of Alcoholics Anonymous, a member of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, Forensic Division and a member of the University of Iowa Speakers Bureau. Bill is survived by his mother, Mary Asenjo of Orlando, Florida; sister Mary Scott and husband Jack of Orlando, Florida; and sister Peggy Kyprianides and husband Savas of Long Beach, New York. He was preceded in death by his father William F. Asenjo, Sr. One of Bill's favorite movies was "Freedom Writers" because he believed that writing is "a vehicle to better understand ourselves and this journey we call life." He facilitated writing workshops to spread the word about the benefits derived from writing your thoughts. He was developing plans to offer it to schools in Washington County. The family asks that donations be sent to Freedom Writers Foundation, Lion's Club of Crawfordsville or the charity of your choice in his memory.
